Universal Access Gate

The Universal Access Gate is more than a piece of infrastructure — it’s a doorway to freedom, connection, and shared outdoor experiences. Designed, tested, and installed by Trailworx Australia at Gap Creek Reserve in Brisbane, this first-of-its-kind solution opens the trails to everyone, from parents with prams to riders of adaptive mountain bikes — including the latest models with roll-over protection systems. Every curve, clearance, and surface has been shaped with dignity in mind, allowing users to pass through smoothly, independently, and without compromise. Built to last and protect the natural environment, the gate not only keeps parks safe from unauthorised vehicle access but also removes invisible barriers that have long stood in the way of participation. It stands as a symbol of what inclusive trail design can achieve — and a benchmark for accessible outdoor spaces across Australia.

Inclusive and Protective

The Universal Access Gate is engineered to meet the needs of diverse trail users without compromising safety or conservation. Its clarity of purpose and adaptability make it an ideal solution for parks, reserves, and shared-use paths. Featuring a generous lower clearance for wide wheelbases and a tapered upper profile to restrict motorcycles, the gate supports adaptive mountain bikes, handcycles, off-road wheelchairs, prams, and dismounted bicycles. Designed for simple retrofitting to existing fences, it provides a secure, low-maintenance, and future-proof access point for managed trail networks.

Material Selection

The gate is constructed from high-strength, corrosion resistant steel, hot-dip galvanised to ensure long-term performance in outdoor environments. Materials were chosen for their ability to withstand frequent use, environmental exposure, and minimal maintenance requirements.

Ease of Installation

The gate system was designed for efficient on-site  installation with minimal disruption to surrounding parkland. Prefabricated components and a modular assembly approach allow the gate to be installed in both new and existing pathways without extensive civil works. This reduces both project timeframes and costs.

Dimensional Considerations

A critical aspect of the design was accommodating the full spectrum of mobility devices, including adaptive mountain bikes, recumbent cycles, off-road wheelchairs, and newer models with roll-over protection systems.
